# Let the speaker’s meaning lead the edit.

Talking-head editing begins with what the speaker means. Build a coherent spoken sequence before adding captions, cutaways or motion graphics.

## Inputs

- Original footage with intelligible speech
- A transcript or access to a transcription tool
- Audience, target length and statements that must remain intact

## Copy this brief

Edit this talking-head recording around its main argument. First identify the useful statements and their source timecodes. Build a coherent spoken cut while preserving qualifications, names and factual meaning. Keep natural breaths. Add B-roll only where it explains the words, and create captions after the cut is stable. Flag unclear words and any edit that changes context. Retain the original media and an editable project.

## Review the result

- [ ] The shortened argument preserves the original meaning.
- [ ] Cuts do not clip consonants or create abrupt room-tone changes.
- [ ] Captions match the final spoken cut.
- [ ] Visual overlays support rather than compete with the speaker.

## Make a spoken outline

Read or listen to the full recording before selecting attractive individual phrases. Mark the opening claim, supporting points, examples and conclusion with source timecodes. If the introduction depends on a definition given later, keep that context or rewrite the structure explicitly with the speaker’s approval.

## Stabilize the A-roll

The spoken performance is the A-roll. Choose complete thoughts and listen across each cut at normal speed. A repeated sentence can be removed when a later take fully replaces it, but a qualification such as “in this example” may be essential. Preserve enough breathing room that the speaker still sounds human.

Do this before generating captions. Otherwise every structural revision can leave subtitle timing and word emphasis behind. A transcript is an aid to selection, not proof that an audio boundary will sound clean.

## Add a reason for every visual layer

Use a diagram for a relationship, a screen recording for a product action and B-roll for context that benefits from being seen. Keep the speaker visible when facial expression or emphasis carries the meaning. Decorative cutaways should not conceal an important qualification or create false evidence.

## Review a complete pass

Listen once without reading the transcript. Then watch on the intended screen size with captions enabled. Check whether every example still belongs to the sentence beside it. A polished frame cannot rescue an argument made misleading by its cuts.
